What does steampunk have to do with virtual reality? It turns out, quite a lot. Virtual reality is an emerging technology that enables you to experience computer-generated environments through special headsets... however, we can do it for free with the use of a special viewer for virtual worlds called Firestorm. Virtual reality gives users the ability to step inside a digital space and interact with objects as if they were real. In the world of virtual reality, anything is possible – even steampunk! Free Port was recently created by our own uber talented builder Nexus Storm. Nexus had never did a steampunk build, so research was done. Living for a time in a semi industrial area of the UK helped to inspire Nexus to build the perfect little post industrial urban sim. You will find all kinds of electrical things, grimy streets, contraptions, gloomy alleyways and of course, many many shops! The brick buildings were inspired by the real life Prince Albert Docks in Liverpool.
Not only will you find plenty of free items to steam-afy your virtual sim, but you will also find absolutely adorable steampunk outfits to immerse yourself in the feel of the style.
How can you not love Steamys Speakeasy? Watch the electric thingamajigs on the roof... careful you don't stand under one! One of our many clubs on the grid, Steamys has plenty of room for dancing and hanging out.
You can get your groove on to music from the DJs in the DJ booth. The bar offers a variety of drinks to quench your thirst. You can be served a glass of Dr. Patel’s Grave Elixir, Steamwork Coffee, or Devil’s Nectar. (don't you just wish we could taste in virtual? It's coming!)
HOW TO GET INTO NEVERWORLD FOR FREE -- IN JUST A FEW MINUTES
To come inworld, download the Firestorm viewer for opensim and add the grid to the viewer. Create an avatar account and log in. That's it. You will be wandering around our world in a few short moments.
1- Download the Firestorm viewer https://www.firestormviewer.org/os-operating-system/
2- Install viewer - then add grid on the preferences page under opensim (see below) URI is http://hg.neverworldgrid.com:8002/ this is the address you add in the line "Add new grid"
3. Create a Neverworld Avatar. You do not have to get a email confirmation to play.
4. Use the viewer to login with your new avatar name.
